Duck hunting has long been a popular kind of hunting. In the Midwest and central United States in states like Wisconsin and Iowa, duck hunting generally occurs on lakes, marshes, swamps, or rivers where ducks and geese land during their migration. Another great duck hunting location is in Louisiana the Centeral Fly Way. Cornfields and rice paddies are also common duck hunting grounds, since geese and ducks often feed on the grain that remains in the field after harvest. In some areas, farmers rent or lease hunting rights. Some farmers or hunters form hunt clubs, which can cover thousands of acres and have resort-like amenities, or be as simple as a shallow pit hunting blind dug into a field. Many hunters also enjoy duck hunting with a hunting dog. On the East and West coast of America and many parts of Europe, duck hunters often focus on the seashore, sometimes using duck hunting boats. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains millions of acres as National Wildlife Refuges open to public hunting, Texas duck hunting and Arkansas duck hunting rank very high in the country.

Duck Hunting Tip:

Looking for a New Dog?

Large Münsterländer

This field hunting dog characteristically is calm, gentle with children and well adjusted to living in the master's dwelling. The versatile characteristics of the LM provide for a reliable companion for all facets of hunting. A recent comparison of the scores of 82 LMs with 104 other versatile breeds of hunting dogs entered in North American Versitile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) tests showed that the Large Munsterlander is a versatile hunting dog with a difference. On average, LMs work closer and are more responsive to the handler than other breeds  of hunting dog, although the LM's pointing instinct matures later. The LM displayed greater cooperation than other breeds of hunting dog and an excellent concentration in the tracking and recovery of crippled game birds. During search for game, most LMs range 50-150 yd, depending on cover. Their long and thick coat protects them against cold and allows them to search dense cover thoroughly.

Duck Hunting Tip:

To make decoys as good as new, hang them on a fence, spray with autobile tire cleaner solution and allow to dry overnight. In the morning, the original colors will be brighter and easier for ducks to see.
